Garden Season is Upon us – What’s Hot this Summer!

Garden Season is Upon us – What’s Hot this Summer!
Are you looking for unique ways to beautify your landscape this season but not sure where to begin? Like anything, each year lifestyles diversify, causing a shift in current trends. These trends are what often determine the decisions we make. When it comes to home gardening this year, it’s all about encompassing happiness and wellness, through sustainable gardening. So what does that entail exactly?

1) Edible Container Gardens
As a society, healthy eating and living is more prominent than ever before. When you eat locally, or more specifically from your backyard, it’s not only financially beneficial it also provides a great deal of convenience and control. Growing your own vegetables gives you full access to them at all times; you choose the fertilizer and the conditions in which your plants are exposed to, and when you’re ready to enjoy them, there’s no need to head to the grocery store! Limited backyard space? No problem; container gardens allow you to enjoy the benefits of home gardening without requiring large space. For those who would prefer to grow their own vegetables but don’t have the property space for a standard full-size garden, this solution is for you. A very simple way to get started is to grow your own culinary herbs. Consider thyme, rosemary and basil, these are all easy to grow and even easier to cook with! For the same price as two back of fresh herbs, you can instead buy a live plant and have the fresh herbs all season right outside your back door!

2) Colorful Shades
Feeling down? It’s time to liven up your garden! Bright colors such as energizing blues and greens are a big hit this season, and do wonders to boost your moods. Each of these shades promotes positive emotions of relaxation and serenity, while hues of yellow, pink and purple are uplifting, creating feelings of joy. In addition to colorful blossoms, garden accessories in metallic hues such as gold and silver, effortlessly complement the appearance of any garden. Try coupling these colors with neutral tones to really make your garden pop.

3) Resort Feel
Resort atmospheres continue to be a common theme, inspiring garden designs. People want to remake their backyard to resemble that of a past vacation, maintaining a connection to that relaxing environment. Incorporating fire bowls, bamboo, tropical plants, or water fountains quickly transforms a basic garden into a tropical escape, creating a sense of Zen and peace. Who wouldn’t want that!

4) Be One with Nature
Although flowers are a beautiful sight, peeking out your window to the view of a vibrant butterfly or hummingbird is even more rewarding. Placing a bird bath or bird feeder adds a gorgeous element to the scene of a backyard, while attracting lovely birds and other creatures you may not have the pleasure of seeing otherwise. Whether it’s nesting material, water, or food, each of these supplies a quick and efficient means for attracting new wildlife. It’s also a nice technique for introducing and educating young children on all things nature.

5) Recycled Content
As a society we are becoming more eco-friendly in terms of our everyday lives, making conscious decisions to better protect our environment. Part of this involves choosing products made from recycled material for the purpose of landscaping, rather than product made from raw material. More than ever before residents are striving to reuse and re-purpose old items lying around the house to create something new. Recycled concrete is a great resource for the formation of pathways, or backyard patios. Additionally, glass bottles are unique in that they can supply a variety of fun purposes for your garden. Often these bottles are used for creating lanterns, wind chimes, and attractive garden art. It’s an enjoyable project to do on your own or with the kids, and the end result gives your garden a distinct look with a personal touch!

Our Irish Garden at Canada Blooms Got an Extra Kick of Irish

On March 17th, also known as St. Patrick’s Day our Irish garden on display at Canada Blooms received an extra kick of Irish when we had an Irish dance troupe perform in the garden. It was a very entertaining experience and drew quite a crowd!

Renowned Italian chef Massimo Capra even dropped by and had his photo taken with the dance troupe! He dyed his signature mustache in support of Tourism Ireland’s contest where one lucky individual will win a trip for two to Ireland. There’s still time to enter the contest! For more information go visit Tourism Ireland.

Contributors to the Show

Building a garden like the one we have just completed would not be possible if it were not for some of the donations and loans we receive from generous suppliers.  Here is a list of contributors for the 2013 show.

Faeries -  Lezlie from www.dreamglass.ca

Dragons,  Fiddle heads and Pond surround – Jeff Smith from www.Hammersmithmetalworks.com

Giants Causeway pillars -  John from www.classicartisan.com

Eco Lawn -  www.wildflowerfarm.com  or www.eco-lawn.com

Gridlock and Camp flooring -  product is produced by Norleans Technologies but they would like anyone interested to contact us at Parklane for installations.

Granite rocks and Dolmen-  stone was provided on loan from www.allstonequarry.com

Limestone Rocks for exterior wall – www.buckhornsandgravel.com

Of course our Fantastic Parklane Team excel at pulling it all together.  We can sometimes get obsessed about our critical paths but they sure come in handy when extending a deadline is not an option.   This year we completed the garden a full 24 hours before judging and as the Irish would say ” nobody threw a strop!”

(translation- we got along well)

Thank you to our hardworking team.  Cassie, Joanne, Alex, Nate, Brandon, Kyle ,Drew and Carolyn.

You can all be proud of a job well done.   Anna and Kim.

Our family Gathering Ireland 2013

Now!   This is a wonderful expression that was heard everywhere we went in Ireland.

We could be arriving in a town and just as Joanne was parking the car she would announce  “Now!”

If we ordered a hot whiskey or a Guinness the bar tender would put it down with flourish and say “Now!”

Joanne’s mum, Mary, would serve us a bowl of stew or soup and say…”Now!”

When Kim bought me a claddagh ring for valentines day and the transaction was complete the store owner would hand him the package and remind him “Now”.

I love this expression because It is a great way of reminding us to live in the moment.  As soon as it is said we all would take note of where we were and what we were doing.  The trip was unbelievably awesome.  Everyone had a great time and got along fabulously.

I have to apologies for not blogging regularly while away but it was such an action packed trip I fear I would have been letting my own “now” suffer if I had.

Be that as it may we have an enormous photographic file of our trip and Kim is currently turning it into a slide show that I will post shortly on our video page or here  Ireland Gathering 2013 roberts/van maris Family

All in all it was a trip of a lifetime and only intensified our vision for the Canada Blooms garden.

Canada Blooms 2013 – Picking Plants

One of our most enjoyable winter tasks is picking the plants for Canada Blooms.   The process is very interesting.   Charlie Dobbin collects plants all summer and fall from suppliers around the country.  She then compiles a list of availability and sends it to all the garden builders around Christmas or early in the new year.

Many of us sit poised with a wish list and a tentative planting plan and as soon as the list pops into our inbox we pounce on it and race to send in our preferred plants.  It is first come first serve.  As soon as I saw it this year I sat Kim and Cassie down to put our list together.   Kim was a little rattled by my anxiety.  He kept saying “slow down, calm down or you will make a mistake.”   I don’t think he believed me that this was a race.

We submitted about 2 hrs after getting the original list and still we were not first.  We lost out on a few things.  The most upsetting was we were only allowed 1 of the 3 flowering dogwoods available.   No worries.  Everything happens for a reason.  We redesigned the placement of the one dogwood and added in a couple of big oak trees.

I almost don’t remember where I wanted to place the other two dogwoods.  You can be sure however, that I will notice  where the other two dogwoods end up and probably give a hats off to my speedy fellow garden builder.

In mid February Charlie has all of us attend the greenhouse where the plants are being forced so that we can tag our picks.  Because of our upcoming trip to Ireland we had to made our visit earlier this year.   Unfortunately many of the trees have not yet leafed out but it was still possible to have confidence picking them based on bud swells and the general structure of the trees.

It is such a treat to walk in a green house in the deepest cold of the winter.  The life in the air is palatable.

Our plants are the ones with the lime green tags

We leave this Wednesday for Ireland.   We are all very excited about our own family gathering at the end of February.  Kim , Taura and I will be traveling the west cost before meeting up with the others in the south.   My next post will be from the lovely and  magical  emerald isle.
